P1/M1

1) . You need to find a print based advertising campaign for a music artist. This should be for the launch of an album or single and must also have moving image content - for example a music video or web/tv commercial. You can find a number of good ones on the DIABOLICAL website.

P1 Evaluate an existing advertising campaign, including:

a) aims and objectives

What this the key message of the campaign? What is being sold?
b) target audience
Who is the campaign aimed at? give evidence.
c) representation
How is the band being styled? What impression of the band/artist is being presented to the audience? Are there and genre conventions or inter-textual references.
d) campaign message
What overt and covert messages are there?
e) print-based advertisements used in the campaign
Which different formats are used eg. posters, billboard, bus shelter, bespoke installations, social media and memes
f) relevant legal and ethical issues
Print adverts are regulated under the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) - please read the section on 'Harm and Offence' on the ASA website and justify why your advert works within these guidelines.
Consider any ethical issues that people might have with the ad. Detail possible issues.
g) regulatory bodies
What is the role of the ASA?
Does your advert need to take account of any of the other ASA guidelines ? If not, why
h) method
Does the print advert use particular tactics to attract an audience eg: shock, timing, placement, schedule? Explain.
Find examples of the adverts in the real world, where were they placed. If on the side of the bus, for instance, talk about why the placing of it there is especially suitable
If the ads are in a magazine, which magazine, and why is it especially suitable?

Example of pass criteria:

2) Choose a music video and an advert for the same bands album and tour campaign.

M1: Evaluate audio-visual and/or audio advertisements that are used as part of the chosen advertising campaign. They explain how advertisements produced in different media can be linked and used together to convey the campaign message.

Example of merit criteria:

The Catfish and the Bottlemen tour video maintains the central themes and branding from the print campaign, The use of black and white images is uncomplicated and maintains a classic and timeless monochrome look. The fonts and logos for the band and the tour dates are also consistent. The use of footage from the live shows brings the audience into the like experience and build on the band as encouraging participation and community with their fans . - an important factor in this genre.

The representation of the band as as an alternative indie group is followed through in their videos.  In the video for Cocoon they replicate scenes from the edgy and groundbreaking film 'One Flew Over the Cookoos Nest' .

The video below for the single 'Pacifier' depicts the band in' what we think is about to be a fight, with a group of 'casuals', when in fact they are mixing it up  in an underground football match.  This keeps the bands alternative look at the same time as showing a nod an a wink to a broader mod and casual culture for who the music might also appeal too!

These themes are followed through in the bands social media campaigns and merchandise, with the monochrome and simple line drawing art a feature on T-shirts, badges and jewellery!
